Your Path to Belonging.
We guide you through every step toward becoming a proud Canadian citizen — with a faster, simpler, and seamless process.
Citizenship Requirements
To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, permanent residents must meet the following criteria:
-
Residency Requirement:
You must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) within the five years preceding your application. Time spent in Canada as a student, visitor, worker, temporary resident, or protected person during the last five years can count as half-days, up to a maximum of 365 days, toward your total residency requirement.
-
Language Proficiency:
You must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French, Canada’s two official languages. Applicants aged 18 to 54 must provide proof of language ability when applying. -
Knowledge of Canada:
You must have a fundamental understanding of the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens, as well as knowledge of Canada’s history, geography, government, and values. Applicants are required to pass the Canadian citizenship test once their application is approved. -
Good Character:
You must not have a criminal record or be involved in any legal matter that would prevent you from being granted Canadian citizenship.

You may be ineligible for Canadian citizenship if you:

- Do not meet or cannot provide evidence of the minimum residency requirement;
- Fail to meet the language proficiency standards in English or French;
