What is a Visitor Visa?
A Visitor Visa—officially called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)—is an official document issued by the Government of Canada that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a temporary stay. This visa is required for individuals from non–visa-exempt countries, whether the purpose of travel is tourism, visiting family, attending business meetings, studying short courses, or exploring Canada for a limited period.
Most visitors can stay in Canada for up to six months. Upon arrival, a border services officer may stamp your passport and indicate the exact date you must leave. If your passport is not stamped, you are allowed to remain in Canada for six months from the date of entry or until your passport expires, whichever comes first
Eligibility Requirements for a Visitor Visa
To qualify for a visitor visa, applicants must:
- Hold a valid travel document, such as a passport.
- Be in good health.
- Have no criminal record or immigration-related offenses.
- Demonstrate strong ties to their home country (such as employment, property, financial assets, or family) that will ensure their return.
- Provide proof of sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay in Canada.
In some cases, applicants may be required to undergo a medical examination or submit an invitation letter from a Canadian resident.
Eligibility Requirements for a Super Visa
Requirements for the Applicant (Parent/Grandparent)
- Hold a Valid Travel Document (such as a passport).
- Be in Good Health and successfully pass an Immigration Medical Exam (IME).
- Demonstrate Intention to Leave Canada by showing strong ties to their home country (such as employment, property, financial assets, or immediate family members) to ensure their return after the visit.
- Have No Criminal or Immigration-Related Violations that would make them inadmissible to Canada.
- Hold Private Medical Insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is:
- Valid for a minimum of one year from the date of entry.
- Paid in full.
- Provides a minimum of $100,000 in coverage for health care, hospitalization, and repatriation.
Requirements for the Host (Child/Grandchild in Canada)
- Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada, or a Registered Indian.
- Provide a Signed Letter of Invitation promising financial support for the entire duration of the applicant's stay.
- Demonstrate Sufficient Funds by meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) threshold (Low-Income Cut-Off or LICO) based on the size of their family unit (including the Super Visa applicant(s)).
Difference between Visitor Visa & Super Visa
Canada offers two main types of visitor visas, depending on how frequently you plan to travel.
Visitor Visa – Multiple Entry Visa
Multiple Entry Visa
A Multiple Entry Visa lets you travel to and from Canada as many times as you need until the visa expires. This is the most common type of visitor visa issued by IRCC.

Super Visa – Stay & Entry Type
Super Visa (Long-Term Multiple Entry Visa)
The Super Visa is designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Unlike a standard visitor visa, the Super Visa functions as a long-term multiple-entry visa, allowing extended stays in Canada.

- Allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years per visit.
- Remains valid for up to 10 years, enabling multiple long-term visits without reapplying
- Ideal for families who want their parents or grandparents to stay for extended periods while avoiding repeated visa applications
